A couple of weeks back we got a glimpse of the promise of Google Glass and what it could possibly mean in our daily lives and when traveling. It appears the Internet search giant isn't the only ones who have been considering how a Heads-Up Display (HUD) could be of benefit however, as earlier today Recon Instruments released the teaser image on the right that appears to indicate they are working on a HUD for cyclists.
If you're not familiar with Recon, they already make some high-tech displays that interface with a set of ski googles to provide all kinds of information while on the slopes. Their system connects to a smartphone via BlueTooth and shares a host of data such as speed, altitude, GPS location and more. It even has integrated social functionality that allows the user to read texts, locate friends and control their music. I had the chance to try one of these systems out at Outdoor Retailer last year and found it to be unobtrusive but useful and fun. The idea of having one for cycling sounds promising as well.
Recon hasn't shared any info about this product yet other than more info will be coming in the summer. It's easy to speculate on what it will provide however and I would suspect it will give riders the ability to track speed, navigate, and view other data while on the go. Beyond that, it's tough to speculate, but it could also provide the ability to read texts and control music too, although those possibilities seem a little scarier when you're on a bike and dealing with traffic.
For now, we'll just have to wait to see what Recon unveils down the line. But as a cyclist, I'm kind of excited about the possibilities here.
