Video: New Speed Descent Record Set on Mont Blanc

Last fall, a pair of climbers attempted to set a new speed record for the fastest descent of Mont Blanc back to the church square in Chamonix, by speed flying and mountain biking. After reaching the summit, Nicolas Blanchard and David Bozon set off at a breakneck pace to return to the base of the mountain, hoping to best the 32 minute record that was currently in place. They were able to complete that quest, reaching the square in just over 15 minutes. The video below shows how they did it. Hold on to your seats. It's quite a ride.

A few weeks back, I posted the first in a new series of videos from EpicTV entitled Sport & Survival. The host of that series, Patrick Sweeney, specializes in showing us how to properly train to take on challenging endurance activities. In this case, he was showing us how to prepare for the Iditarod Trail Invitational, a grueling 1000-mile long ultra-event that takes place on the Iditarod Sled Dog Trail in the winter.

Below is the second part of what will ultimately be a five part series. In this episode, Patrick wraps up his final prep work, and begins the race in earnest. But just one day in, he finds out why this is one of the toughest events in the world.

Video: Mountain Biking An Abandoned Railway In Argentina

Here's a mountain biking video that straddles the line with looking incredibly fun, and incredibly crazy at the same time. It follows a team of riders as they explore an old railway that has been abandoned for nearly 20 years. They follow it for about 100 km (62 miles) through remote Argentine deserts, crossing rickety looking old bridges, and sketchy trails in the process. It looks like it would make a great trail, if someone bothered to clean everything up. But for these guys, it presents a few challenges.

Video: Drone Captures Epic Footage Of Mountain Biking In New Zealand

Adventure filmmakers continue to put drones, and other technology, to good use in their craft. Case in point, this beautiful looking mountain bike film that was shot in New Zealand and features, some amazing footage that was captured using a personal drone. It is fantastic to look at, and a great example of what these types of tools can do. Oh yeah, and New Zealand looks amazing as well, but that mostly goes without saying.

The result is a great looking kayaking film that will get you excited to see more of what the state has to offer.

Video: Highlining In The Alps

I still haven't made up my mind whether or not highliners are incredibly brave or incredibly crazy. Case in point, the subjects of this video, who strung up a tightrope between two peaks in the Alps, and proceed to walk across it. It looks very scary to me, but the scenery sure is nice.

Video: Speed Flyer Escapes Avalanche In The Alps

Speed flyers mix skiing and paragliding to make descents that wouldn't necessarily be possible on skis alone. Case in point, this video shows a speed flyer zipping off a high cliff in the Alps, just as a small avalanche rolls down the mountain around him. The result is a short, but pretty spectacular clip, that also happens go provide some wonderful views of the mountains near Chamonix, France. beautiful stuff.

Video: Crazy Urban Mountain Biking In Valparaíso, Chile

I've mentioned the now infamous urban mountain biking race held in Valparaíso, Chile before, but it is also an amazing sight to behold. Especially when seen from the perspective of the rider. That's exactly what this video shows, as Marcel Gutiérrez flies down a course like nothing you've ever seen before. It has banks, jumps, drops, and even the occasion dog or pedestrian crossing the street. There is nothing else quite like it for sure.

The duo traveled by stand-up paddleboards and kite surfed from Pemba, Mozambique to Zanzibar in Tanzania, hopping between more than 50 island along the way. Their six week journey is now the subject of an online film series brought to us by EpicTV.  You'll find the latest episode of that series below, which gives us a glimpse at an adventure that is long way from the big mountains or the polar regions that I often write about on this blog. Video: Go On A Sufferfest With Alex Honnold And Cedar Wright

Awhile back, climbers Alex Honnold and Cedar Wright came up with the idea of summiting all 15 of California's 14,000-foot (4267 meter) peaks in a single go using just their bikes and feet as modes of transportation. The result was not what they expected, as what seemed like a rather simple expedition turned into a complete "Sufferfest." The boys are sharing their story in a series of videos for EpicTV, with part one available below.

Video: Ueli Steck Talks Annapurna (and Everest!) With EpicTV (Part 3)

The third part of Ueli Steck's interview with EpicTV was posted earlier this week, bringing an end to this very interesting and engaging series. In this latest episode he touches on Annapurna a bit but it is more focused on Everest and the experience he had there this past spring when his team had a violent clash with Sherpas. As always, it is interesting to get Ueli's take on the mountaineering world and he offers good insights once again. If you missed the firs two parts of the interview you can watch them here and here.

Video: Ueli Steck Talks Annapurna With EpicTV (Part 2)

Recently our friends at EpicTV caught up with Ueli Steck and had a chance to sit down with him to talk about his amazing solo summit of Annapurna. Last week part 1 of the video interview was released and today we get part 2. This time out we get to hear Ueli, who is for my money the best alpinist in the world today, talk about how easy it is to solo big mountains. I imagine this is the same way that Michael Jordan thought it was easy to score points in a basketball game. It just comes so naturally to them that they don't even consider that us mere mortals have a hard time comprehending how they can accomplish the things they do.
